| Set in the Longzhou County in the southwest Guangxi
Zhuang Autonomous Region, Longgang Nature Reserve with
an area of 8000 hectares conserves China's most perfectly
preserved tropical karst ecosystems. Constructed in
1980, it is studded with hosts of karst pinnacles and
mountain ridges. caves and subterranean rivers. These
weird and wonderful rock formations heighten the scenic
beauty of the area and at the same time provide a sound
base for research into the formation and development
of karst regions and tropical ecosystems.
The area's special soil base has given rise to an
unusual biotic population, with over 1280 species of
plants recorded. The hsienmu, China's rarest and most
precious hardwood tree, grows there. Its timber is exceptionally
tough and hardwearing. As an representation of the southeastern
tropical rain forest plants, the tallest known "
Heaven Pillar " tree (Guangxi parashorea) in China
was discovered at the Reserve in 1977. it towers at
60 m.its trunk is 3m in diameter. Longgang Reserve is
also the home of the famous ornamental plant"Gloden
Flowerpot the camellia family.
Longgang also supports over 120 species of animals.
One of the world's rarest animals, the white-headed
langur, or leaf monkey, at the first level of protection
in China, haunts the Reserve in a population of hundreds.
It has stomach divided into partitions somewhat like
that of cud¡ªchewing animal, and feed more on leaves
than on any thing else; it also has thin slender body,
elongated limbs and a very long and whip¡ªlike tail;
the head being rounded and the muzzle short and thick.
Other animals at the Reserve under state protection
include the rhesus monkey, clouded leopard. serow and
hornbill.
