| Opened in 1982, Chebaling Nature Reserve lies in
Shixing County, northern part of Guangdong, near the
Quannan County, Jiangxi. It ranges along the southern
side of Nanling Mountain Chain, covering an area of
7,545 hectares.
Here is the transitional belt between southern subtropical
zone and central subtropical zone with primeval plant
communities. The Reserve comprises the central subtropical
evergreen broadleaf forests, 30¡ã to 40¡ã slopes, deep
ravines and mountains, the peak of which rises to 1256
m.
1345 species of seed plants are residents, 14 species
are rarest and endangered including Tsoong's tree, Chinese
bretschneidera and cavaler eurycorymbus, 4 species are
newly found. It is also a good place to collect medicinal
plants and other economically valuable plants.
Wildlife is much in evidence, including 91 species
of birds, 35 species of mammals, 15 species of amphibians,
20 species of reptiles, 1220 species of insects, among
them the 34 species are under key state protection:
South China tiger, clouded leopard, otter, yellow ¡ª
bellied tragopan. 121 species of butterflies are recorded
and possess special attraction for researchers and tourists.
The South China tiger has been placed on China's national
register of endangered animals, its conservation has
become a matter of great popular concern.
