| With the history of over one billion years since
rising from the bottom of sea, the world-famous Fanjing
Mountain lies in the central section of the Wu ling
Mountain Chain on the Yungui Plateau, with its main
peak of Mount Phoenix 2,572 meters above sea level.
There are eight streams in Fanjing Mountain. The Fanjing
Mountain Nature Reserve was established in 1978, covering
an area of 41,900 hectares.
Subtropical forest vegetation is fundamentally preserved
in natural status. With a variety of ancient and peculiar
plant species and varied vegetation types, there are
five vertical zonations from peak to foot of the mountain.
The Reserve can be called a garden of ancient. flora
and fauna. With several tracts of its distribution and
famous for its beautiful flowers.the dove tree in the
Reserve has been named. ¡±Chinese Dove Tree". In
addition, the Reserve houses other rare plants, such
as Chinese tuliptree, false pennyroyal. bacury. etc.
And with over 500 species of medicinal plants found,
such as eucommia, the Fanjing Mountain is usually called"
a mine of medicinal plants".
A variety of rare wildlife lives in this "natural
green kingdom", including over 170 species of birds
and 57 species of mammals. As a most noticeable animal
in the Reserve, the Guizhou golden monkey, also called"
grey golden monkey", is one of the three species
of golden monkeys peculiar to China, but with the least
existing number spreading in a very small region. Other
rare animals are clouded leopard, assamese macaque,
tufted deer golden pheasant * Reeves' pheasant and so
on. At the sources of streams, lives an amphibian¡ªgiant
salamander which is locally called ¡±Wawayu (Baby fish)".
