| Situated on the northern side of the ridge of Qinling
Mountain Range, and in the south of Zhouzhi County,
Shaanxi Province, the Zhouzhi Nature Reserve was set
up in 1988. It occupies an area of 52, 931 hectares,
of which 90 is covered by forests. It is set to preserve
the precious rare wild animal golden monkeys in China.
In the Reserve, there is a dense forest with abundant
plant resources. Its forest vegetation belongs to warm
temperate zone coniferous and broadleaf mixed forests
based on the Middle China and North China. plants, including
619 species of higher plants, of which 22 species are
under the key national protection, e. g. the bark of
eucommia, Northeast China ash, tuber of elevated gastrodia,
lacebark pine, bark of official magnolia, wingceltis,
etc.
The Reserve has 199 species of vertebrates, covering
about 30. 7 percent of the total in Shaanxi Province.
Among them 22 species such as golden monkey, panda,
takin, leopard, clouded leopard, black stork, etc.
are under the key national protection. Nowadays, 14
groups of 1500 golden monkeys are living in the Reserve
which becomes a largest golden monkey perching place
in China.
