LIUPAN MOUNTAIN NATURE RESERVE

Located at the southernmost part of the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region crossing the three counties of Guyuan, Longde and Jingyuan, Liupan Mountain Nature Reserve was built up in 1982 with an area of 67? 300 hectares primarily for the protection of j forests and wild biota as well as ecosystems.

The Liupan Mountain runs from south to north for over 200 km. It is indicated through an analysis of geological structure that this young mountain was formed 2¡ª12 million years ago. Its ridges are more than 2,500 meters high above sea level and its main peak called Migang is up to 2,942 meters high above sea level.

According to statistics, the Reserve has plentiful flora and fauna resources although it is locating on the Loess Plateau with a few vegetation. It houses a total of 788 species of higher plants, of which up to 155 species have a higher economic value, and a total of 206 species of wild animals including 158 species of birds, 39 species of mammals, 5 species of amphibians, and 4 species of reptiles. Among them leopard, wood musk, red¡ªbellied golden pheasant, pukras, and golden eagle, etc. are under the key national protection.

Finally, it should be pointed out that the Liupan Mountain has always been a place contested by all strategists and during the world-famous Long March, the Chinese Workers' and Peasants' Red Army led by Mao Zedong climbed successfully on this last high mountin in Octoberi 935 with poem titled "Qingpingyue ? Liupan Mountain" written down. Since then, the Liupan Mountain has become one of famous mountains in the modern revolution history of China.
