LAOTIE MOUTAIN¡ªSNAKE ISLE NATURE RESERVE

Situated at the Snake Isle near Dalian City, Liaoning Province, and the Laotie Mountain in the southernmost part of Liaodong Peninsula facing the Snake Isle, the Laotie Mountain¡ªSnake Isle Nature Reserve was set up in 1980.

In the Gulf of Bohai, the Snake Isle has an area of less than 2 square kilometers with merely 215 meters high above the water surface. It provides a home for more than 15.000 Pallas pit vipers. It has also a rich and varied flora, with over 180 species of angiosperms constituting 70 percent of the ground cover. Mulberry trees, maple trees, paniculed goldenrain trees and big fruit elms grow as shrubs on the Snake Isle because the island is frequently exposed to fierce sea winds. These shrub trees are the Pallas pit viper's main haunt. They camouflage themselves around the branches, tricking both their enemies and prey.

Since 1950s, many scientists have visited this Island to conduct surveys and researches on natural conditions.

The Laotie Mountain is a volcano and a "Relay Station" for migrants to move north and south.

UP to 1 million birds resting here in spring and autumn each year. thus becoming a real *Bird Station'. With rich rain falls and suitable weather, it houses abundant growing plants such as mulberry trees, big fruit elms.
