WUYI MOUNTAIN NATURE RESERVE

Located at the middle subtropical mountainous region crossing the three counties of Chongan, Jianyang and Guangze in the northern part of Fujian Province, the Wuyi Mountain Nature Reserve was set up in 1979 with an area of 56,530 hectares.

Famous for its natural scenery, the Reserve is also rich in fauna and flora resources which can be rated as a rare species gene bank in the world, thus becoming a source of "Biotic Models and Specimens".
The Reserve is such a region in southeast China that its vegetation has been best preserved. There are abundant species of plants, of which more than 1.800 species are pteriodophytes, gymnosperms and angiosperms. In the most widely distributed subtropical broadleaf evergreen forests, there are beech family. laurel family, tea and magnolia families. In the middle mountainous zone. there are mixed coniferous ¡ª broadleaf forests. deciduous broadleaf trees. common China fir. Chinese cedar, etc. In the top mountainous zone. there are coniferous forests of Taiwan pine. Chinese cedar and Taiwan hemlock. On the summit of Mount Huanggang with an altitude of 2,158 meters above sea level. there are herbacious plants and meadow. as well as a few isolated young Taiwan pines and Cavalerie clethra. In addition, the Reserve has several hundred species of fungi, e.g. edible fungi, medicinal fungi and other fungi which are natural enemies of forest and agricultural pests but more effective than any pesticide.

Statistics show over 300 species of birds, over 100 species of beasts, over 30 species of amphibians, over 70 species of reptiles. 64 species of snakes and over 5.000 species of collected insects. The Reserve is also a mine of insect life. Of China's 32 orders of insects. 31 orders are found here.
