MEIHUA MOUNTAIN NATURE RESERVE

Located at the intersection zone of three counties of Shanghang, Liancheng and Longyan north west in Fujian Province, the Meihua Moutain Nature Reserve was built up in 1985 with an area. of 22,168 hectares, of which 96. 3 percent is taken by the mountainous lands with heights from 800 to 1,800 meters.The major goal of the Reserve is to conserve the ecosystern of forests, natural China firs, and rare species of wild animals.

Featuring transition from southern subtropical zone to middle subtropical zone, the Reserve possesses abundant biota resources. There are 1,521 species of seed plants, of which near 1,000 species are seed¡ªarbores including Chinese hemlock, Huangshan pine, Fujian cypress, English yew, tricuspid China fir, sassafras, mountain ceylon cinnamon, submerging, camphor tree and nanmu. It is one of the Chinese medicine sources in Fujian Province with 180 species of often used medical plants such as short calyx China pistache, common dysosma, honeysuckle flower, bark of official magnolia, etc.

According to preliminary survey, there are 66 species of beasts, 198 species of birds, 29 species of amphibians, 69 species of reptiles, and 1,750 species of identified insects. Among them 37 species such as South China tiger, pangolin, clouded leopard, golden cat, leopard, sika deer, yellow-bellied tragopan, etc. are at the first level of national protection.

The Reserve has a lot of natural/cultural landscape including all kinds of forests and the revolutionary relics of the Gutian Congress, as well as ancient temples in remote mountains, thus becoming a rare biological resources treasure-house, an ideal scientific research and education base and a fine tour place.
