SONG MOUNTAIN NATURE RESERVE

Song Mountain Nature Reserve, with an area of 4660 hectares in Yanqing County at the outer suburb of Beijing, was established in 1986.

Mountainous land is running all round the Reserve, its highest peak towers to 2199.6m above sea level. The average annual rainfall is 50mm, whilst the average annual temperature measures 8.5 C , forming a warm temperate continental monsoon climate. It is remarkable for its range of habitats-granite regions, sheer cliffs, mountain forests, unusual varieties of landscape, and for the range of animals and birds which occur there.

Plant resources flourish here are no fewer than 700 species of seed plants. In the east part of the Re-serve and at an elevation of over 1,000m above sea level thrives a precious natural Chinese pine forest of 200 hectares. Many of them grow out of crevices of cliffs. The "King" of them is 350 years old, its breast diameter measures 80cm. On the northern slopes and at an elevation of 1200 to 1800m prevails the secondary forest of white birch, large-fruit elm, Amur corktree and Mongolian oak.

29 species of mammals and 125 species of birds are residents in the Reserve, 15 species of which are under key state protection, including: leopard, goral and golden eagle.
