BAISHILAZI NATURE RESERVE

Situated in Kuandian County in northern part of Liaodong Peninsula, the Baishilazi Nature Reserve was built up in 1981 with an area of 7,405 hectares.

It belongs to Qianshan Mountain system connecting the remaining part of Changbai Mountains. In the Reserve, the plants are distributed vertically. At elevations of 400 to 1,000 meters above sea level, the forest cover is mixed coniferous and broadleaf forests with the lower part of red pine, maple and birch, and the upper part of growing mixed Mongolian zha red pine forests, thus constituting its typical and representative forests in this area.

It is rich in natural resources with 997 species of higher plants and 771 species of lower plants including 10 kinds of China's key reserved plants such as ginseng, willow, gastrodia and wild soybean. Some valuable bryophytes are growing only in the Reserve besides a few bryophytes lived in Japan.

There are 166 species of vertebrates including sable, otter, black bear, musk deer, long¡ªeared owl, red¡ªfalcon, goshawk, golden eagle, mandarin duck, and blossom¡ªtailed hazel grouse , of which 24 species are under key national protection.
